The need for emergency preparedness doesn’t end when your family leaves the house. In fact, the consideration and energy spent on household readiness should be reaffirmed at work and school.
School administrators have a responsibility to parents and the community to guard the health and happiness of students and staff. Incidents of school violence and threats of disaster have only heightened parent, teacher and administrator vigilance, and magnified the importance of emergency planning and exercise.
For administrators and educators, the keystone tenets of all-hazards preparedness (i.e., Prepare a Plan, Make a Kit and Be Informed) apply, but school preparedness strategies must also consider the emotional and material needs of students, parents and teachers.
Meanwhile, teachers are on the frontline of school preparedness efforts. They have the unique opportunity to engage students in discussion and to implement grade-appropriate curriculums on hazards and preparedness.
